Hudson Taylor advised Jonathan Goforth “To be successful in China, you need to go forward on your knees.” I believe that this prayer principle is true in Canada as well.
1. Pray for Direction. In Acts 13 the church prayed for direction, and the Holy Spirit said: “Set apart Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Prayer can direct us to the work that we are doing, or should be doing, and prayer can open doors of opportunity for ministry.
2. Pray that God will protect His church and His people. The spiritual warfare outlined in Ephesians 6 not only says “put on the whole armour of God” but also says ”pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers . . . . . Be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people”. The Apostle Paul says in II Timothy 4 “Alexander the metalworker did me great harm. You too should be on your guard against him, because he strongly opposed our message. These are perilous days, and there are many enemies of the cross who are rising up against the church.
3. Pray for God’s Word to go forth in Power. “Pray for me,” Paul said, “That whenever I speak, words may be given to me that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the Gospel . . . . . Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should” (Ephesians 6: 19 – 20). Pray that God’s Word will be boldly proclaimed and fearlessly practiced.
Hudson Taylor also said, “God’s work was never intended to be stationary, but always to be advancing.”
