Have you ever wondered if God is absolutely trustworthy? Does God really care about our employment, marriage, family, financial or physical needs? We desperately hope and pray that it will all turn out okay, but we don’t see much light at the end of the tunnel. Can we really trust God?
As a young believer, I rarely went to God when I needed help because I thought that God probably had more important things to look after. After all He had to take care of the entire universe. How could I add the weight of my problem to such complex matters? Thankfully, as I learned more from the Word of God, I came to realize that God cares about even the most minute issues of our lives. Doesn’t He see even the sparrow that falls?
Here’s how I gradually, through prayer, began to more fully trust God with my life. We need to:
- Pray with honesty. Jesus did. The night before His crucifixion He went to the Garden “deeply distressed and troubled”. He did not relish the agony that awaited Him, and He prayed honestly, “Father, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me”. We can be honest about our fears and with openness and transparency ask God if He has a “Plan B”.
- Pray with faith. Notice that Jesus said, “Father, everything is possible for you”. Nothing is too big or too difficult for God. We pray because we believe that God can make a difference.
- Pray with submission. God knows what is best. We don’t always see the big picture. Jesus prayed “Take this cup from me, yet not what I will, but what you will”. It is the heart of God to give us what is best.
- Pray with patience. “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord”. God doesn’t always answer on our schedule, but often we can look back later and realize that God was there with us even in our difficult moments.
God can be trusted. He really does care. “Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before Him, God is a refuge for us” Psalm 62:8
